Radon and Radon Testing Information

Radon Testing

What is Radon?

Radon is a colorless and odorless radioactive gas which comes from the soil. The U.S. Surgeon General has warned radon exposure is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers (Press release). The gas can be in the air we breathe. Exposure to radon over a long period of time can lead to lung cancer and other long term effects. Any radon level poses some health risk. While it is not possible to reduce radon to zero, the best approach is to lower the radon level as much as possible. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the action level at 4 pCi/L (picocuries of radon per litre of air). At this level or higher, it is highly recommended to install a radon mitigation system to reduce the radon level." The only way to determine radon levels is radon testing by a professional like Dayton Radon Doctor LLC.

What to Expect During a Radon Test?

  1. Prior to radon testing, closed-house conditions are required for a minimum of 12 hours.
  2. Licensed radon inspector will need to set the monitor (one of the approved radon detectors) in the lowest, livable level of your home.
  3. Closed house conditions need to be maintained for the 48 hours the radon test is in progress.
  4. The licensed radon inspector (home inspector)  will pick up the radon monitor at the end of the 48 hours.
